Pessac Leognan – located on the outer ring of the Bordeaux City, it is the origin where the whole concept of fine red Bordeaux was launched in 1660, by the owner of Chateaux Haut-Brion. Pessac Leognan, the new name, is actually the heartland of the Grave – the appellation on the left bank of the inner Garonne River. Pessac produces both dry white wines and red wines, using classic Bordeaux varieties. Most Pessac Leognan Blanc is barrel aged or even barrel fermented Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, possessing richness, crispiness and complexity. The best, such as Haut Brion Blanc could last for decades easily. The reds are varied, depending on the Chateaux; nevertheless, all are classic claret with high proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, which could last 5 – 20 years.
Chateau Haut Brion and La Misson Haut Brion – are no doubt the most prestige Chateaux in Pessac Leognan, both owned by the Dillon family. However the style is very much in difference. Chateaux Haut Brion shows more subtleties, earthiness and elegance as it always does. It will not reveal its true face until it spends more than 10 years in the cellar. On the other hand, La Mission Haut Brion shows more richness, power and fruitiness with darker colour and wildness. Density and intensity are the hallmark of La Mission Haut Brion. The commercial level wine made by Haut Brion, the Clarendelle brand also carries the soul of the winemaking philosophy from Haut Brion, producing sound quality Bordeaux AC wines.
Other producers like Smith-Haut-Laffitte, Chateaux Haut Bailly also produces great classic Pessac Leognan.
