Baden
Baden – sits on east bank of Rhine River, south to the border of Switzerland and west to the border of France. This is Germany’s south most viticulture area, famed for its dry Pinot Noir, also called ‘Spatburgunder’ in German. So it is the most important (most widely planted) grape variety for Baden. Whites are less important, Muller-Thurgau and Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder in German) take the major share of the market.
As very close to France, Baden’s viticulture and winemaking models are provided by French. Baden’s Spatburgunder is famed for its richness and extra body, given by the unique volcanic and mineral rich soil. The best are opulent, fruity and rich in body and they are aged in new oak barrique – a classical French approach.
